ANIME

Anime, for those who don't know is the japanese word for animation, when used here, it means japanese cartoons. It is pretty popular in the US, especially among nerds. I'm a nerd, but you probably already knew that. I have my own web page, right? Anyway, I spend a lot of my time watching anime. I watch more Japanese TV than I do american. My favorite thing about anime is the whacky humor and the weird characters that are so common in the shows. My main source of anime is the Texas Anime Club, the TAC. They have weekly showings, frequented by over 200 people, and a very large tape library that members can borrow from. If you live in the Austin area, I encourage you to check them out. Here is their web page: http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~anime

Akazukin ChaCha

chacha My favorite anime right now is Akazukin ChaCha, a show targeted at... four to five year old girls.... Well, who cares, the show is really funny, which is why I like it. I usually start laughing early in the episode, and don't stop until it's over. If you don't like the random weirdness style of humor, it probably isn't for you. The characters are little kids who are attending magic school, I guess it's magic kindergarten. Most are witches or wizards, but there's also a werewolf, a ninja, a mermaid, and some boy with a gigantic head. I don't know what he is. Also, the teacher is some maniac named "Rascal" who screams all the time and threatens to whip the kids if they don't behave. The only problem I have is that they have one of those stupid magical girl transformation sequences in every episode, (like they do in sailor moon, for those who aren't very immersed in the anime subculture) but I cut them all out on my copies, so it doesn't matter.

Rurouni Kenshin

Kenshin

This show is probably the best action anime around. Good animation, really cool characters, funny when it tries to be, this is an EXTREMELY popular show. It's also pretty informative about Japanese history, at least it is to unlearned heathen westerners like myself. It takes place 10 years after Bakumatsu, a time af war that marked the end of the feudal sysem. (you know, local lords, samurai, and all of that.) It is about one of those that brought about this change, a man famous for being the most powerful swordsman alive, the Hitokiri Battousai. However, he is now trying to serve penance for all those he killed by wandering Japan as a Rurouni, and wielding a "Sakabatou", a sword with the sharp and blunt edges reversed, so he can use his sword techniques without killing. It also has a great cast of supporting characters and villains, including Saitoh, my favorite character. Aku, Soku, Zan. Much thanks to the shinsen gumi for fansubbing this one.

Yuu Yuu Hakusho

[Chibi

This is another good anime that doesn't really get as much attention as it deserves. You see Ranma, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and Kenshin merchanidse all over the place, but I can't remember ever seeing anything for Yuu Yuu Hakusho. Dammit! I want to buy stuff! why! Ahem. Anyway, this has a good mix of humor and action, interesting characters, and so on. One thing that I especially like about it is that the fighting techniques they use tend to be pretty unusual, rather than the standard rapid punch attack and ki blast. Also the names of the techniques are pretty cool, if a bit cumbersome for something to be shouting out in the middle of a battle. My favorite is Hiei's "En-satsu-koku-ryu-ha!", where he summons a black dragon, then eats it to gain all of it's power for a while.
