Exoth

Exoth was originally the typical mad scientist cliche, with all kinds of inventions and creations going berzerk and so forth. As Irritability evolved, and his situation became more clearly defined, Exoth himself devolved into a terminaly lazy taskmaster, sending his various minions out rather than doing anything himself. Anyway, I originally envisioned Exoth heading some company to finance his experiments, which is why he wears a suit. Later on, but when the comic was still in its "the characters are college students" phase, I started drawing him in more everyday clothes, but readers wrote in saying they preferred the suit. I guess it had become kind of an identifying factor for him. Exoth is kind of a contradictory character, in that he has all this power and gadgets, but no motivation to do anything with it. Having him slumped down in the couch, watching TV while wearing a suit and tie sums that all up pretty well, I think.
For Exoth's design, I wanted someone smaller than Chappy. I don't really know why I decided on long grey hair, except that I originally wanted it to be darker and more metallic. I couldn't get that the way I was drawing it, and it always looked much lighter than I intended. Before long, that was the way it looked in my mind, so I stopped trying to make it look dark. His face has a much "sharper" look to it than Chappy's in the chin, nose, and eyes. Also, his eyes don't have any light in them. I think these things are appropriate, since he's such a bastard, but I couldn't really justify that. To summarize, I didn't put much thought into Exoth's design, I just went with what felt right.
